Restoring from Plesk Backup

You can restore a Windows (Plesk) hosting website in one of two ways. If you made a backup yourself in Plesk Backup Manager, you restore it from there. To restore from the weekly backups Domain India keeps of shared hosting, you ask support. Either way, a restore overwrites what is there now, so save the current state first.

Key takeaways

If your Plesk shows Backup Manager (or Backup & Restore) under Websites & Domains, open it, pick the backup, choose what to restore (files, databases, mail, or all) and click Restore. For a backup you made by hand, upload the files with FTP or the File Manager and import the database. To restore from Domain India's weekly backups, open a ticket with the domain, what to restore and the date. Always download your current files and databases before you restore.

The full guide

How backups work on Windows hosting, and how to make one, are in creating backups in Plesk.

1. Before you restore

  • Save what is there now. Download httpdocs and export your databases, even if they are broken. A restore replaces them, and you may need something from the current version.
  • Decide how much to restore. If only a database is damaged, restore only the database, not the whole account and your mail.
  • Note the date you need. Pick the newest backup from before the problem started.

2. Restore with Backup Manager (if your Plesk shows it)

  1. Open Plesk.
In the client area, open your hosting services, pick the Windows service and click the Plesk button.
  2. Open Backup Manager
under Websites & Domains. If you can't see it, search "backup" at the top of Plesk. If it isn't there, use section 3 or 4.
  3. Pick the backup
from the list. If you downloaded it earlier and it's no longer listed, look for an Upload option to add it back.
  4. Choose what to restore:
everything, or only files, databases or mail.
  5. Click Restore
and wait for it to finish before you change anything.

3. Restore a backup you made by hand

  • Files: upload them into httpdocs with FTP on port 21 (Require explicit FTP over TLS) or with the Plesk File Manager, which can extract a ZIP you upload.
  • Database: use the import or restore option on the database in Plesk's Databases page, if your Plesk offers one for your database type. If not, ask support.
  • Connection strings: if the database name, user or password changed, update them in web.config or appsettings.json.

4. Restore from Domain India's weekly backups

Use live chat or open a ticket and tell us:

  • the domain;
  • what to restore: files, a specific database, or mailboxes;
  • the date you need it from.

5. After the restore

Load the site
Open the pages that matter and one that reads from the database.
Recycle the app
Re-save web.config or recycle your pool, so the app loads the restored files.
Test email
Send and receive a message on each restored mailbox.
Change passwords
If you restored after a hack, change every password; the backup may pre-date the break-in, not fix its cause.
How do I restore a backup in Plesk?

If your Plesk shows Backup Manager under Websites and Domains, pick the backup, choose what to restore and click Restore. If it doesn't, upload your files with FTP or the File Manager and import the database, or ask support.

Can Domain India restore my Windows hosting from its backups?

Yes. Backups included with shared hosting are weekly. Open a ticket with the domain, what to restore and the date you need, and support will take it from there.

Will a restore overwrite my current website?

Yes. The restored files, databases or mail replace what is there now. Download the current state first if you might need anything from it.

Can I restore only the database?

Yes. Choose only the database in Backup Manager, import only the database from your own copy, or ask support to restore just that database.

My site shows old content after a restore. Why?

The application may still be running with files it loaded earlier. Re-save web.config or recycle the application pool, then clear your browser cache.
